McCabe l e c t u r e s at B l a c k f r i a r s College, Oxford and i s t h e o u t s p o k e n e d i t o r of N e w Blackfriars, a m o n t h l y firebrand and v o i c e of t h e D o m inicans and p r o g r e s s i v e C a t h o l i c s in E n g l a n d today. A l t h o u g h F r . McCabe i s a f r e q u e n t v i s i t o r t o I r e l a n d this occasion w a s r a t h e r s p e c i a l as on May 14th last h e became an Irish Citizen. H i s g r a n d f a t h e r c a m e f r o m W e s t Cork "and a n y w a y I w a s tired of b e i n g a s u b j e c t , " h e said. With his e y e s d a n c i n g w i t h m i s c h i e f the t h e o l o g i a n added that h e n o w w a n t e d to c r i t i c i s e I r e l a n d f r o m within as well as f r o m the o u t s i d e . A l t h o u g h N e w B l a c k f r i a r s h a s b e e n c o n s i s t e n t l y out spoken on the N o r t h of I r e l a n d w a r ( g e n e r a l l y c o n d e m n ing Britain's role t h e r e and has had two b o m b s e x p l o d e in its office) the m a g a z i n e a c h i e v e d w i d e n o t o r i e t y w h e n when in 1967 Fr. M c C a b e w r o t e a s t i n g i n g e d i t o r i a l at the time of C h a r l e s D a v i s ' r e s i g n a t i o n f r o m t h e Church. The editorial e x p r e s s e d s o m e s u r p r i s e at the D a v i s affair, stated that he r e a l l y did not g i v e sufficient r e a s o n s for leaving the C h u r c h and a d d e d t h e b i t t e r p h r a s e "we all know the C h u r c h is c o r r u p t a n y w a y . " The following week-end the Sunday Telegraph included the h e a d l i n e "Church is c o r r u p t . . . s a y s D o m i n i c a n . " N e e d l e s s to say t h e r e was a s e n s a t i o n a l fuss and Fr. McCabe w a s d i s m i s s e d f r o m t h e p r i e s t h o o d and fired from his e d i t o r s h i p . H e w e n t to D u b l i n and a w e e k later read in t h e I r i s h T i m e s t h a t h e w a s r e i n s t a t e d as a p r i e s t again d u e to his " e x e m p l a r y b e h a v i o u r d u r i n g his dis missal." T h r e e y e a r s later h e g o t back his j o b as e d i t o r of N e w B l a c k f r i a r s a n d b e g a n h i s first e d i t o r i a l "As I was s a y i n g b e f o r e b e i n g i n t e r u p t e d " (the whole pisode is r e c o r d e d in a book 'The M c C a b e Affair," ublished b y S h e e d and W a r d ) . Fr. McCabe h a s had a brilliant a c a d e m i c c a r e e r and ritten m a n y b o o k s i n c l u d i n g "The N e w C r e a t i o n " and 'Law, L o v e and L a n g u a g e " and o n e of t h e v o l u m e s of h e n e w E n g l i s h v e r s i o n of St. T h o m a s A q u i n a s . H e is t p r e s e n t , God h e l p us, c o l l a b e r a t i n g with D u b l i n jouralist J o h n H o r g a n w i t h w r i t i n g a n e w P e n g u i n B o o k of oman Catholicism. T h i s was Fr. McCabe's first visit to t h e W e s t and he as o b v i o u s l y t h o r o u g h l y e n j o y i n g himself. H e said h e as p a r t i c u l a r l y i m p r e s s e d by our B i s h o p ' s s e n s e of ocial r e s p o n s i b i l i t y in g i v i n g his field in Lr. S a l t h i l l to e d e v e l o p e d a s a c a m p - s i t e f o r i t i n e r a n t s .
