In Galway long . . . long ago

These'exceptionally good photographs, recently acquired by Mr. Tom Kenny, show quite intriguing aspects of Galway life well over one hundred years ago. Dated approximately 1870 -- 1885 this is the first time that these particular ' photographs have been published. They sow in great detail the costumes of the time and the strained faces of people

living during hard times. (Top left) the traditional market scene showing the diff erent and attractive Galway Shawls. Note the rather wellto-do women shoppers in neat hats and one fur-trimmed coat. (Top right) strolling down William Street (middle left) selling the famous Connemara home knit socks in Eg-

linton Street against Anderson's old wall. (Middle dight) fair day at Eyre Square. (Bottom left a washer-woman by the Canal at New Road equipped with her washing-stick; and finally a section of the old turf market location of which we were unable to identify. These photographs are now for sale at Kenny's Bookshop, High Street.
