GALWAY I N T E R - F I R M F O O T B A L L FINALS Division I Roadstone 1-7 Mclnerneys 1-7. Division II. Garages 1-13 Connacht Mins. 0-4. The delayed Inter-Firm finals played at Pearse Stad ium, Salthill, provided plenty entertainment for a fine crowd that braved the wintery weather. The Division II game con trary to what the scoreline suggests provided some very exciting passages especially in the first half when con ditions underfoot were ex cellent but a strong wind blowing from end to end gave Minerals valuable assistance. They swung the ball around well and had they opted to go for points when these were for the taking instead of trying for goals they would be ahead at half time. On the turnover it became evident that the very best efforts of Captain Jim Conneely, Ted Duffy, Harry O'Connor, Tom Small, Derek Lee and goalie Duffy would not be good enough to con tain the well-drilled Garages side who had outstanding players in backs Martin Casserly, Joe Corcoran and Tony Tight', Tom Naughton and Pete Folan at centrefield; Tom Murphy, Pat Kelly and their captain Christy Howley in the forward line. Referee Joe Darcy had no problems with two teams who played fine clean football throughout. carrying an old injury which kept him off for half the hour. Goalie Kildea gave yet an other sound display and was well protected by captain L . Bohan who was superb. Ted Murphy had a good game against All-Ireland player Johnny Hughes and was well supported by T. Killilea on the 'mark' and the youngest on the field Roger Silke of Dunmore. Even for his brief appearance, only ten minutes, Martin Flynn's contribution must be mentioned. Indeed in my view it was he who initiated the move that brou ght that brilliant equalizing goal from George Geraghty. Fergus Gleeson, handling his first Inter-Firm final, was a capable and impartial referee. Presenting the Bowmaker Cup and medals to Christy Howley, captain of the vic torious Garages team, Mr. Cyril Cuff, manager, Bowmaker (I.) Ltd., congratul ated both sides on a very sporting display in difficult conditions. His firm, he said, was proud to be associated with such a well-run com petition and he wished InterFirm many years success in the future. Mr. M. O'Grady, repres enting Concrete Products of Ireland echoed Mr. Cuff's words and added that the spirit of friendly rivalry which characterised Inter-Firm games coupled with the fine sportsmanship displayed set an excellent headline for the youth of the city. S A M MAGUIRE'-S COLOUR COMMENTS CONTINUED My stuff was cut last week. Cut in mid-stream. T h e point of the exercise was to illus trate where we went wrong in the All-Ireland final and how we can learn from our mistakes. Last year one of the present Galway panel asked me to criticise the team con structively now and again, not to be always singling players out for praise. This I did last week. First of all, if I may go on from there, our forward line must be strengthened physic ally. We have a great centre half back--the best i n t h e game--and two very good substitute centre half backs in Michael G e r a g h t y and John Dillon. It is time we experimented with the latter pair. But their time will come sooner or later. That fine win over Cavan in Ballinasloe last Sunday will nave helped to restore confidence. But rem ember let us not place too much emphasis on it. Our team is now fit. T h e Cavan team is not. Still it is good tp win (3-15 to 1-2 for the record). It is time, too, that some of the T h r e e in a R o w team were incorporated into the Galway football managerial set up. Mind you I do not suggest a F o u r t h team man ager. The fact that we have 3 team managers is a bit of a laugh. For the record the 3 team managers are Sean Purcell, John Dunne and Bertie Coleman. As I under stand it, a team should have one team manager with a deputy appointed to take over in his absence. It is time that men like M a r t i n Newell Enda Colleran, Bosco M c Dermott and P a t D o n n e l lan, were incorporated into the scheme of things. Newell has already given positive proof of his coaching ability He trained, coached (and played for) the London junior football team in an AllIreland title win while he worked in that city before he returned to Galway. Some of these men I know are willing to help. Even at minor level They are recent. They are fit and they are all eager. I do not suggest that our manager ial system is all wrong. It has the name of being the best in the game. But I do suggest that an injection of new " T h r e e in a R o w " blood on to the Board would be good. It is purely a question of handing on the torch.

MOTORING SOCCER
Next Sunday a driving test is being organised by the, Galway Motor Club, starting at the Trappers Inn, Tuam Road, at 2.30 p.m. The event will be run by P. J. Gannon. Entries will be taken at the start and provide a good op portunity to "have a g o " having recently witnessed the experts in action on the Salt hill Promenade. Results will be announced at the Inter national Hotel.

BOXING
First boxing tournament of the season is being held to morrow night in the Holy Family School luxurious new gym, in aid of Galway's Mentally Handicapped Week. It appears to be a very at tractive bill with Michael John Heffernan former Irish light middleweight champion, recently returned from Amer ica and after a lapse of one year from the ring, meeting stiff opposition in Oliver Markhan, Ennis B.C., Munster light middleweight cham pion. It will be interesting to see if Heffernan has lost any of his power punching which won him the Irish champion ship in 1971. The everimproving Brian Quinn, Oly mpic B.C., who had a win over Irish International Pa Brown, Limerick B.C., last month, -goes in with the rough tough Munster 'light welter champion, Sean Mahon. An other star performer on the bill is Oliver Crehan, bantam weight who goes in with T. Curtain, Limerick. Crehan had a wonderful finish to last season, in knocking out the Army bantamweight champ ion, J. Flynn, in Longford. He was also one of the three winners on the Duggan Shield for Connacht. At the time of going to press the promoters of this tournament are still trying to fix up a bout for Olympics young heavyweight, Tony Martin, Connacht Senior heavyweight champion. So all in all it looks like being a very good night's entertain ment and don't forget it's for a very worthy cause. RINGSIDER.

I must stand by Johnny Dooley and Paddy Hennelly to come out as the eventual winners despite the fact that Pat Sweeney and Jimmy Walshe--after their hamper victory on Sunday last--are the pair in form. Frank O'Brien is certainly in the news lately with his photo in all the local papers after winning a "four-course" competition with very consistant scoring. Frank got his name in the Western People last week also for winning a big fourball in Swinford with Michael Waters where they each got a set of tyres as their prize. On Saturday last Frank combined with Eamonn Meagher to win a turkey com petition. No doubt, the hand icap committee are having a look at Frank's handicap what with his 68 in Mullingai and his two fourball wins to gether with his general play. Incidentally, every one is delighted to know that Frank's wife Peggy, is on the mend after her recent illness.. Winter is officially in now that the 25 card drives have started and will continue each Wednesday. There is always plenty of crack once the games start and everybody looks forward to them. Why not come along and join in ? Un fortunately, this invitation cannot be extended to the ladies--yet! I suppose they will eventually be welcome! I n t e r Alia I was in Athenry last Sun day to see Waterford defeat Galway in the N.H.L. by 2-13 to 2-6. On this form Galway will not stay in Division " A " next year. They have so little fight. The sole exceptions were Iggy Clarke, a great trier, Ted Murphy at times, Michael Connolly and Larry Bohan.

T h e minor hurling success of Kiltormer over Gort will be a great boon to hurling in the area. How about a special train to Cork for the double fixture on Sunday week ? We will talk about the sug gested new rule changes at a later date. Till next week Slan agaibh.
