O Y S T E R F E S T I V A L '73 Gilbeys of I r e l a n d L t d . recently held a press confer ence t o a n n o u n c e their cos p o n s o r s h i p of this year's G a l w a y Oyster Festival. T h e Festival, w h i c h celebrates its n i n t e e n t h b i r t h d a y this year is one of t h e oldest festivals in I r e l a n d . " H e l l o Mr. S" said he, as I stepped longingly into Paddy Burkes, Clarenbridge, w o n d e r i n g w h e r e t h e a r o m a of m i n t s a u c e , n e w potatoes and fresh vegeta bles was coming from. H e anticipated me a n d said "we are doing dinners out h e r e on W e d n e s d a y and T h u r s d a y nights"! said he "Can I have dinner here t o - n i g h t " s a i d I. H e l o o k e d " g e n u i n e l y " s a d as h e s a i d "we a r e booked out for to-night" he continued ,"are you free to-morrow n i g h t ? " I b o o k e d a cosy table immediately. How e v e r h e d i d say t h a t "If y o u w a n t e d to b r i n g a p a r ty a n y n i g h t , I w o u l d g i v e you a dinner of your choice a n d look after you! Sail T r a i n i n g S h i p Asgard visits G a l w a y this week from W e d n e s d a y 11 t h to F r i d a y 13th. Asgard is o n her a n n u a l t r i p a r o u n d t h e coast of Ireland. Asgard left H o w t h o n J u n e 17th w i t h h e r skipper C a p t . E r i c Healy in c o m m a n d a n d i n c l u d e d in h e r crew w e r e W a t c h Officers from Dublin, Westport and Cas tlebar. T r a i n e e s o n b o a r d c a m e from D u b l i n a n d Cork and included Donough O ' L e a r y from Salthill, G a l way. Asgard arrived in Sligo o n J u l y 1st a n d left for G a l way o n July 4 t h with V o l u n teer S k i p p e r S e a m u s K e r r i g a n from D u b l i n in c o m m a n d . H e r crew included t h e following: W a t c h Officers -- M r . J o h n Cahill, Castlebar, and M r s . A n n M a r t i n , G a l way. T r a i n e e s -- Misses A n n M c H u g h and A n n Marie R a b b i t t e , b o t h from Galway with others from W e s t p o r t a n d Strandhill. D u r i n g her stay in G a l w a y Asgard will b e p r e p a r e d for her next voyage with t h e help of m e m b e r s of t h e G a l w a y Bay Sailing C l u b a n d L o u g h rea Sailing C l u b . I t is h o p e d that it will be possible t o arrange an evening t r i p d u r ing h e r stay in Galway. O n F r i d a y , 13th July Asgard will leave G a l w a y for C r o s s h a v e n w i t h trainees Phillip Kennedy and Diarmuid O ' L e a r y from Salthill, G a l way. O n 25th July Asgard sails to take p a r t in t h e Sail Training Association race from W e y m o u t h to St. M a l o w h i c h is d u e to take place o n 30th July. H e r regular skip p e r C a p t . Eric Healy will be in c o m m a n d a n d h e r crew include as W a t c h Officers Barry M a r t i n and M i c h a e l Casey of G a l w a y Bay Sailing C l u b . A s g a r d has h a d m a n y successes in r a c e s ; she was first in h e r class in S . T . A . R a c e in conjunction w i t h t h e Olympics. Asgard was built in N o r way in 1905 a n d was a w e d d i n g p r e s e n t of D r . and M r s . H a m i l t o n O s g o o d of Boston t o their d a u g h t e r o n her marriage to Erskine Childers. I n 1914 A s g a r d m a d e her famous g u n r u n n i n g voyage b r i n g i n g 900 g u n s a n d 2,900 r o u n d s of a m m u n i t i o n from B e l g i u m to H o w t h for t h e Irish V o l u n t e e r s . I n 1926 Asgard was sold by M r s . Childers a n d passed t h r o u g h several h a n d s u n t i l p u r c h a s e d in 1961 b y t h e Irish G o v e r n m e n t . Asgard was u s e d b y t h e Irish N a v a l Service a n d in 1968 was p u t in t h e charge of t h e M i n i s t e r for F i n a n c e for use as a Sail Training Ship, under the g u i d a n c e of a c o m m i t t e e of y a c h t s m e n k n o w n as Coiste a n Asgard.
