Moycullen

Surprise

Moycullen surprised everybody except them selves in overpowering Corofin w h o have beaten them twice recendy by 2-11 to 0-8. T h e winners ran riot with Fahy, Kelly, C o y n e and L e e scintillating! R o r y F a h y in particular ran through the Corofin raearguard a l m o s t at will a n d g o a l e d a v e r y fine p e n a l t y i n t h e process. I have seldom seen Corofin play worse. But the best game of the day, I believe, was in Dunmore where Mountbellew defeated Tuam Stars b y 2 - 5 t o 1-6 with the issue in doubt u p to the closing seconds. I n fact, a great T u a m shot hit the butt o f the upright w i t h goal w r i t t e n all o v e r it.

Last

Sunday

The Intermediate team had a good win over Spiddal in the 1st round of the champ ionship on the score 0-10 to 1-4 at Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening. This was very tough and at times over robust game and scores were hard to come by. Mervue had 0-7 to 1-2 at half time. We had some good open patches of football during the hour by both teams. Mervue players who impressed were Ger Cahill, Albert Hardiman, John Keogh, Jimmy Nolan, Donie Farragher and EricEhvood.
Our U - 1 4 team had a 2 - 8 to 0 - 3 w i n over Caltra at M e r v u e o n T h u r s d a y in the League. Our players to shine were C o n o r O ' D o n o v a n , Kenneth Scanlon and Declan Folan. Our U-14hurlers hada good w i n over Renmore and have qualified for t h e C o u n t y semi-final, as a result. Players w h o s h o n e were Brian Leahy, Conor O'Donovan, K e n Scan lon and Paul Walsh.

Galway Swimming Club
The 57th Annual General Meeting of Galway Swimming Club was held recently in the Sacre Coeur Hotel, Salthill. T h e represent ative attendance heard encouraging reports from all t h e Officers looking back o n a g o o d year a n d all p r e s e n t l o o k f o r w a r d to bigger and better things in the future. It was pointed o u t that t h e Club was the oldest Club in Connacht a n d great pride was taken in this fact a n d tributes were paid to past members w h o had been the backbone of the Club over m a n y difficult years a n d to w h o m a great d e b t of gratitude w a s owed. In particular tributes were p a i d , o f c o u r s e , to t h e late Jimmy C r a n n y w h o is still w e l l r e m e m b e r e d a n d always will b e i n G a l w a y Swimming Club with affection a n d gratitude.

Tuam and Pearse Stadium
Later on I was in T u a m Stadium to see St. Michael's defeat Milltown in the Galway S.F.C.byO-8toO-7.This was o n e of St. Michaels' greatest wins and a t r i b u t e t o their all r o u n d fitness. I have watched St. Michaels train regularly in recent weeks in the S w a m p (South Park) under Tommy Lally a n d their dedication is paying off. T h e positional play of D a m i e n Tummon a n d t h e all round catching o f both H u g h Blehean and Adrian Brennan (the former m i n o r goalie) was impressive. Milltown t r i e d h a r d at t h e e n d b u t St. Michaels in fact should have won by more. O n e weakness in their play was the ballooning o f the ball over the sidelines from goal kickouts a n d clearances. T h i s almost c a u s e d their undoing.

R o w i n g Success Continues
FOLLOWING the great doable by St. Joseph's first crew at Trinity Regatta, their younger counterparts had a resounding success at Limerick last Saturday. At O'Brien's Bridge the untried Junior C eight were drawn against hot favourites Limerick in their beat of the New York Cap.
T h e r e w a s a large entry o f 10 c r e w s f o r t h e J u n i o r C four event. T h e St. Joseph's four w e r e drawn against fancied St. Michael's a n d dark horses L e e in their heat. Contrary to expectations, St. Michael's faded early and L e e r o w e d strongly until halfway w h e n Bish pulled out a comfortable lead a n d w o n by a length and three quarters. In their semi-final t h e Galway boys overcame a strong Fermoy squad by a length, putting t h e m into the final with favourites Limerick o n their home water. F r o m t h e start L i m e r i c k rowed well and quickly led b y three quarters of a length; t h e y kept this lead until 2 0 0 m e t r e s f r o m t h e finish. B u t Bish maintained a driving pace t o catch t h e m before t h e line. A n exciting
