ments were made by DR. PAUL McQUAID, Con sultant Psychiatrist to the Department of Child a n d Family Psychiatry, Mater Hospital, Dublin, at the inaugural meeting of CARE in Galway last weekend. Dr. McQuaid and Seamus O Cinneide (Chairman of CARE) were guest speakers at the meeting. In a survey of n adol escent boys admitted to a hostel in Dublin, out o f 322 o v e r a p e r i o d o f 10 years w h o had come from the two boys schools in County Galway it was discovered that three of t h e m were mentally ill on arriving and remained mentally ill throughout their stay in the hostel. One arrived in a condition described as 'border line' meaning that he could only function adequately with massive external support and b e c a m e mentally ill during his stay. O n e other arrived in a condition which would not have per mitted h i m to become ade quate in terms of social and vocational self support but normalised during his stay. T w o others arrived "vocationally a n d socially destitute" were not helped and remained that w a y to the t i m e of their dis charge. Only one boy ar rived in a condition des cribed as 'normal'. The o t h e r s a r r i v e d a n d left i n conditions between what is described as 'normal' a n d 'socially a n d voca tionally destitute'. T h e sig nificant thing about "Community Homes" (new n a m e for Industrial Schools) in Galway City and County is that they, to a large extent, cater for children from areas far distant. ren come from Dublin, and in the case of s o m e are separated by not only a vast distance but signi ficant travelling obstacles. Letterfrack, County Gal way, has been designated a " Special School". H o w ever, since it has been H o w e v e r , since it h a s b e e n shown that a great m a n y of the children similar to those boys in Letterfrack are likely to be e m o t i o n ally disturbed, behaviorally unstable or mentally ill, their n e e d s a r e likely to include medical, psy chiatric, social case work and other assistance."
