COMMENT
CHRISTMAS 1972 IT HAS been a bad year for Ireland; so bad in fact that for the first time since 1920 many people in the country arc looking to the Christmas season in the hope that the charity and humanity which seems to surface even in those who are normally indifferent to the pleas of humanitarianism, may help to speed a return to peaceful, normal conditions. It is not yet clear if a ccasc-firc can be arranged in Vietnam in time for the holy season. However it does seem that this particular chapter in the harbaric story of mankind is almost over. The Pope, when informed of the delays which have arisen, expressed regret and publicly stated that he hoped the parties involved would get on with the peace-making. The fact that he made no mention of the Irish situation would Seem to indicate that he has less hope for an early solution of the conflict in Ireland than in Vietnam; It is difficult for some to accept, but the fact remains that this country is at present one of the major, if not the major centres of armed conflict in tin eves of the world. We are about the only place in the world this Christmas where Christians -- forgive the remark -- kill each other regularly for the U>ve of God. Tribal violence lias become a normal pari of life for some of our people. Killings, and the killings of ordinary citizens in particular, has become part of a horrible power-game. But much worse, we, those people not directly involved, have almost come to accept the situation. Phrases like "peace on earth," "goodwill to all men," must then have an empty ring for many Irish people this Christmas. And yet, as always, there is a ray of hope. There has to be, for if men did not hope, they would have ended civilisation centuries ago. Peace must come, sooner or later. It must be a peace with justice if it is to he a lasting peace. And it is essential that it comes as soon as possible if further lives are not to be lost and further ill-will prevented. He hope the shameful state of our country at this holy and festive time will be enough lo force all concerned to think again. The politicians have a special responsibility in this regard. Hut of course this is an issue to all of us. Injustice cannot last if each and every individual makes a personal stand against it. The real question for all Irishmen this Christmas is -- arc we prepared to make the sacrifice. We should not shout "of course" all at once. Violence and injustice can take many forms. We may excuse ourselves on the Northern issue by claiming that there is little we can do, that we are loo far ermoved from events to influence them. Rut can we honestly say that we would tlo anything, if given the opportunity, in view of the lesser challenges all around us? The poor, the neglected, the deserted, the lonely, the exploited, -- these are all around US in our own Communities. What resolution, if any, have we to do something about their plight this Christmas? And as long as the^r lot remains an unhappy one, surely we should not claim that wc would do better if directly confronted with the horrors of the Northern situation?
