Mr. Martin Brennan Senior. Managing Director 'till his death 1969.

FOUNDED IN 1881, Brennans is one of the oldest business establishments in Galway City and in the West. It was in that year that Mr. Martin Brennan, an uncle of the late Martin Brennan senior, moved to Galway from Ennis. In 1910, the late Martin Brennan senior joined the estab lishment, and worked his way up to become Manager under his uncle. On the death of his uncle, in 1923, Mr. Brennan senior took over control of the store and started a new development and expansion operation, which he carried out with great success and became one of the best-known business men in the West of Ireland. After his marriage, his wife Mrs. Bridget Brennan, joined the Company as a Director and took charge of the ladies fashions, which she built up to be the best ladies fashion department in the City. On the death of Mrs. Brennan, in 1967, Mr. Martin Brennan, junior, joined the Company under the supervision of his father. He, in turn, took over control of the Company in 1969 after the death of his father, so once again a new

phase in the life of the Company has begun, as a third generation of Brennans face the challenge of the seventies. The first phase of the new development plan has now been completed, with an extensive modernisation of the shop. The modernisation plan which has been adopted will cater for the widest possible needs of the general public, both in the actual merchandise that is stocked and in the price range of the merchandise. Brennans like to pride themselves in the fact of being a "family Shop" which at all times strives to serve their customers in an efficient and friendly way. Mr. Ray MacManus, who joined the Company a short time ago as General Manager, has excellent experience in retail marketing and distribution. Mr. MacManus, who is married, has been involved in the retail trade for over 7 years, which has given him great experience on the demands and needs of the Galway people.

Throughout the years, the buyers in Brennans have always demonstrated that they have been able to anticipate the demands of the Galway people -- today is no exception. The Buyers: Mr. Michael Browne of the Men's Department; Mr. George Fennell of the Shirt Department; Mr. Dominic Forken of the Household Department; Mr. Bernard Raftery of the Hosiery Department; Mr. Tom Kenny of the Shoe Department; Miss Vera Keavney (Mrs. O'Keeffe) of the Ladies Fashion and Mr. Dermot Houlihan of the Material Department, have shown themselves as a team throughout the years to be buyers of style and elegance. At the same time keeping in perfect harmony with Galway's changing environments, which they shall continue to do in the future, and so continue the pride that they have in Brennans, particularly with the new development. Brennans in the future will strive, as they have done in the past, to satisfy the needs and demands of Galway and the general public.
