2 3 4 5 6 7 May you always back a winner] 8 looking at a bit of red painted wood and waiting, waiting, waiting. There's the Knights of Malta, the Red Cross, the I.S.P.C.A doctors, vets, nurses, and handlers; they're all part of the scene; the races wouldn't be the same without them, in fact it just wouldn't go on. If you hear a call over the public address for a Mr. Hanley, for instance, he is the course plumber, and more than likely is working away while we are having our last one before the next race. If he didn't, maybe there wouldn't be any water for the whiskey after the next race, or maybe some worse calamity. They are all racing people, they make it work, they enable a big boisterous, bursting festival to con tinue for three days without a hitch, without any inconven ience for you, the punter. If an emergency arises, they spring into action and you'll never know about it. "Did you see Lavinia's hat, my dear? really, I don't know how she has the nerve to appear out in something like that". The ladies, what would we do without them? They appear in all their finery and brave the elements in frilly, flouncy hats, and even frillier, flounder frocks and coats. They smile, exchange pleasantries, and enjoy the business of being fem ale. Their spouses, or sweethearts, dressed in oldflannelsor corduroy and carrying a plastic mac probably feel more comfortable, but what do they know of the joy of dressing up? of the thrill of knowing that Lavinia's hat is last years, of the heart stopping, shattering blow it is to see that cute little dress you went all the way to Cork for, meet you face to face on someone else whom itdoesn't suit at all well . . . The Races are for the ladies too, God bless them. So. if you're from Galway, some or all of this may be familiar to you. It may have awoken old memories or even evoked some sadness. We're all Galway people, we know how you feel at this time of the year. Don't we feel the same? Enjoy yourselves, we'll see you at the Races. Dick Byrne. 9
